Labour Prep & Induction Acupuncture

Gentle, effective support for your body's natural preparation for labour. Available from 36 weeks onward.

Dr. Margot ND - A Naturopathic doctor working in Toronto and virtually online.

The opening conversation

Your body already knows how to do this. Sometimes it just needs a little encouragement.

As you move into the final weeks of pregnancy, acupuncture can be a gentle and effective way to support your body's natural preparation for labour. These sessions are not about forcing anything before it's time. They are about helping your body and mind get ready, naturally and on their own terms.

This appointment is available to both new and existing patients and is offered as a standalone acupuncture treatment.

What I can help with

What the Research Shows

Clinical studies have shown that labour prep acupuncture can reduce the risk of medical interventions including fewer inductions, less need for epidurals, and lower rates of emergency C-section. It has also been shown to increase the chance of a normal vaginal delivery, encourage cervical ripening and improved dilation, help relax and soften ligaments to improve pelvic mobility and comfort as baby descends, promote optimal baby positioning, and reduce anxiety and improve relaxation by calming the nervous system to reduce pain perception and emotional tension during labour.

How I approach

Labour Prep & Induction Acupuncture

Treatments typically begin between 36 and 38 weeks of pregnancy and are ideally done weekly until your due date, with increased frequency afterwards if needed. The acupuncture points used may shift from session to session based on how your body is progressing, including baby's position, cervical changes, and your emotional state. Every appointment is relaxing and individualized.

FAQs

Don't see your question here? Reach out and I'll answer it directly.

Does labour prep acupuncture hurt?

The needles used are very fine and most patients find the sessions deeply relaxing. Some points used in labour prep may produce a mild sensation but nothing uncomfortable. Many patients fall asleep during their sessions!

Can acupuncture help if I am already past my due date?

Yes. If you are past your due date and looking for gentle support, acupuncture can be used to encourage cervical ripening and the start of contractions. Please reach out to discuss timing and frequency.

How many sessions of labour prep acupuncture do I need?

Most patients come in weekly from 36 to 38 weeks until their due date. If labour has not started after the due date, sessions may increase in frequency. Every person's experience is different and we adjust based on how your body is responding.

Will labour prep acupuncture force my body into labour?

No. The goal of labour prep acupuncture is to encourage your body's natural readiness, not to force labour before it is ready. Think of it as preparation rather than induction. Your body still leads the process.

Do I need to be an existing patient for labour prep acupuncture?

No. This appointment is open to both new and existing patients. You do not need to have seen me before for naturopathic care.

When should I start labour prep acupuncture?

Treatments typically begin between 36 and 38 weeks. Starting earlier in the third trimester gives us more time to work with your body gradually rather than rushing at the end. If you are past your due date and looking for induction support, reach out and we can discuss frequency and timing.

Is labour prep acupuncture safe in the third trimester?

Yes. Labour prep acupuncture is specifically designed for use in the third trimester and is a well-established practice in prenatal care. I tailor every session to where you are in your pregnancy and how your body is responding.
