Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT/MHT)

As a prescribing ND in Ontario, I offer honest, evidence-informed HRT conversations. No fear-mongering, no pressure, just clarity.

Dr. Margot ND - A Naturopathic doctor working in Toronto and virtually online.

The opening conversation

If you have been researching HRT, you have probably encountered a lot of conflicting information. You may have heard it is dangerous. You may have heard it is the answer to everything. You may have asked your doctor about it and been dismissed, or felt overwhelmed by the sheer volume of opinions online and had no idea who to trust.

You are not alone. HRT is one of the most misunderstood and most frequently asked about topics in women's health right now, and the confusion is completely understandable given the history.

Here is what I want you to know: the conversation around HRT has changed significantly in recent years. The fear that surrounded it for decades was largely based on a single study from 2002 that has since been reanalyzed, recontextualized, and substantially revised. Current evidence supports the safety and meaningful benefits of hormone replacement therapy for most women when it is the right fit, initiated at the right time, and prescribed thoughtfully.

As a Naturopathic Doctor in Ontario I hold prescribing rights including for bioidentical hormone replacement therapy. This means I can have a full, honest, evidence-informed conversation with you about HRT, what it is, who it is appropriate for, what the research actually says, and whether it makes sense for your body. No dismissiveness. No fear-mongering. Just a real conversation based on your individual situation.

What I can help with

Hormone replacement therapy is primarily used to support women through perimenopause and menopause. It can be highly effective for hot flashes and night sweats, disrupted sleep, mood changes including anxiety and irritability, brain fog and cognitive changes, vaginal dryness and discomfort, low libido, bone density preservation, and overall quality of life during the hormonal transition.

It is not right for everyone, and it is never the only tool we have. But for women who are good candidates, it can be genuinely life-changing.

How I approach

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT/MHT)

HRT is never a first conversation or a quick fix. It is part of a broader, personalized assessment of your hormonal health through the Hormone Cornerstone Method. Before discussing HRT I want to understand your full health picture, your symptoms, your blood work, your personal and family health history, and your goals.

From there we have an open and honest conversation about your options, the different types and delivery methods available, the latest research, and whether HRT makes sense for you. There is no pressure in either direction. My goal is to make sure you have the information you need to make a decision that feels right for your body and your life.

Treatment through my practice may include bioidentical hormone replacement therapy alongside dietary and lifestyle strategies, targeted supplementation, and other naturopathic support as part of your complete care plan.

FAQs

Don't see your question here? Reach out and I'll answer it directly.

Will I have to stay on HRT forever?

Not necessarily. The duration of HRT is highly individualized and depends on your symptoms, your health history, and your goals. We review and reassess regularly as part of your ongoing care.

What if HRT is not right for me?

HRT is one tool among many. If it is not the right fit for your situation there are many other effective approaches to supporting your hormonal health through perimenopause and menopause including nutrition, supplementation, botanical medicine, and acupuncture. We always have a plan regardless of which direction we go.

I am nervous about HRT after everything I have heard. Is that normal?

Completely normal and very common. A significant amount of fear and misinformation exists around HRT, much of it stemming from outdated research and sensationalized media coverage. Part of my role is to help you cut through that noise with current, evidence-based information so you can make an informed decision without fear driving the conversation.

Do I have to be in menopause to discuss HRT?

No. HRT can be relevant and appropriate during the perimenopausal transition as well, which can begin years before menopause. If you are experiencing significant symptoms that are affecting your quality of life, it is worth having the conversation regardless of where you are in your hormonal journey.

Can a Naturopathic Doctor prescribe HRT?

Yes. As a Naturopathic Doctor in Ontario I hold prescribing rights including for bioidentical hormone replacement therapy. This is a meaningful differentiator and means I can offer a level of hormonal support that goes beyond what many naturopathic practices provide.

What is the difference between bioidentical and synthetic hormones?

Bioidentical hormones are structurally identical to the hormones your body naturally produces and are derived from plant sources. They are available in a variety of forms and formulations. Synthetic hormones have a slightly different molecular structure. Both have a place in hormone therapy and the right choice depends on your individual situation, which we discuss together in detail.

Is HRT safe?

Current research supports the safety and benefits of hormone replacement therapy for most women when prescribed appropriately. The widespread fear around HRT stems largely from a 2002 study that has since been significantly reanalyzed. The medical and scientific consensus has shifted considerably, and for many women the benefits of HRT outweigh the risks. That said, every woman's situation is different and we discuss your individual risk factors thoroughly before making any recommendations.
