Cortisol & Stress Response

Wired but tired? Burned out and can't recover? Cortisol dysregulation touches every other hormone in your body, and it's one of the most responsive things to work with.

Dr. Margot ND - A Naturopathic doctor working in Toronto and virtually online.

The opening conversation

Cortisol gets a bad reputation, but it is not the enemy. It is a survival hormone, and your body produces it for good reason. The problem is that modern life keeps the cortisol tap running almost constantly, and over time that has real consequences for your health.

When your cortisol is dysregulated, everything feels harder. Your energy is unpredictable. Your sleep suffers. Your mood is all over the place. You might feel wired and unable to wind down, or completely flat and unable to get going. You might swing between both. Your body holds onto weight, your digestion slows, your hormones fall out of balance, and no amount of rest seems to actually restore you. This is not a willpower problem. It is a physiology problem.

The good news is that cortisol dysregulation is one of the most responsive things I work with in practice. When we identify the pattern and address the root cause, the changes can be significant.

What I can help with

Feeling wired but tired, burnout and adrenal fatigue, chronic stress and overwhelm, anxiety and nervous system overactivation, energy crashes throughout the day, difficulty winding down at night, disrupted sleep related to cortisol patterns, weight changes related to chronic stress, hormonal imbalances driven by elevated cortisol, and recovery from prolonged periods of high stress.

How I approach

Cortisol & Stress Response

Cortisol sits at the center of the Hormone Cornerstone Method because it touches every other hormonal system. Elevated or dysregulated cortisol suppresses thyroid function, disrupts sex hormone production, drives insulin resistance, impairs digestion, and wrecks sleep. Addressing cortisol is often the missing piece for patients who have tried everything else.

Through a thorough assessment and targeted testing where appropriate, I look at the full picture of what is driving your cortisol pattern. Common contributors include chronic psychological and emotional stress, blood sugar instability and skipping meals, poor sleep quality creating a cortisol and sleep feedback loop, over-exercising without adequate recovery, nutrient deficiencies that impair adrenal function, and underlying hormonal imbalances that keep the stress response activated.

From there I build a personalized, manageable plan to support your nervous system and restore balance without asking you to overhaul your entire life overnight.

FAQs

Is this the same as adrenal fatigue?

Adrenal fatigue is a commonly used term that describes a state of prolonged cortisol depletion following chronic stress. While it is not a recognized medical diagnosis, the pattern is real and something I work with regularly. I assess it through your symptoms, health history, and where appropriate through testing like the DUTCH test.

Can I address cortisol concerns virtually?

Yes. Virtual naturopathic care is available to any resident of Ontario via secure video or phone.

How long does it take to recover from burnout?

This depends on how long you have been in a stressed state, what other physiological factors are involved, and how consistently we can implement the treatment plan. Some patients feel meaningful shifts within weeks. Others with deeper depletion take longer. We set honest, realistic expectations together and track progress at every appointment.

Do I need testing to address cortisol concerns?

Testing is not mandatory but can be very illuminating. The DUTCH test in particular gives us a detailed picture of your cortisol pattern throughout the day and how your body is metabolizing stress hormones. We discuss what makes sense for your situation at your Assessment appointment.

Can cortisol affect my other hormones?

Yes, significantly. Cortisol has a direct suppressive effect on thyroid hormone, sex hormone production, and progesterone in particular. It also drives insulin resistance and disrupts the gut. This is why chronic stress so often shows up as irregular cycles, low libido, weight changes, digestive issues, and thyroid symptoms. Addressing cortisol is frequently a prerequisite for everything else to come back into balance.

What is the difference between being wired and being burned out?

Both are forms of cortisol dysregulation but at different stages. Wired and tired typically reflects elevated cortisol that is not coming down when it should, leaving you stimulated but exhausted. Burnout or adrenal fatigue reflects a depleted pattern where cortisol output has dropped too low after prolonged stress, leaving you flat, foggy, and unmotivated. Both are addressable and the approach differs depending on which pattern we are dealing with.

What is cortisol dysregulation?

Cortisol is your primary stress hormone, produced by the adrenal glands in response to physical or psychological stress. Healthy cortisol follows a natural rhythm, high in the morning to wake you up and gradually declining through the day. Dysregulation happens when this rhythm is disrupted, either through chronically elevated cortisol, a flattened pattern from burnout, or erratic spikes that leave you feeling unstable and reactive.
